"Today, at the request of the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA), the United States military conducted precision air strikes against ISIL targets in Sirte, Libya, to support GNA-affiliated forces seeking to defeat ISIL in its primary stronghold in Libya," Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook said in a statement, which references one of the Islamic State group's acronyms.

The attack was authorized by President Obama on the recommendation of Defense Secretary Ash Carter and Join Chiefs Chairman Gen. Joseph Dunford, the statement says.

ISIS/ISIL has metastasized into a global threat. The days of catching them in the open is decreasing. Why hasn't Raqqa been flattened? We are winning the battles, but losing the war. "we have met the enemy, and he is us."
