Requiring natural born citizens might lessen the chance, no? Are we just being stupid by allowing those born in other nations to come here and allowing them access to our most intermost secrets?

I don't recall "natural born" being a requirement. As long as he was a citizen, he was good to go. Of course, natural born is no defense against espionage, as plenty have spied for other countries.
