Thanks for reminding us TSgt Joe C. that on April 29, 1862 Admiral David Farragut led a fleet of 24 gunboats, 19 mortar boats, and 15,000 soldiers in a daring run past the Fort Jackson and Fort St. Phillip to take possession of New Orleans.

New Orleans was the largest city population wise in the Confederacy. Its port facilities were indispensable. The loss was not as great as the capital city but just barely. This loss was cataclysmic for the Confederates.
