I have an acquaintance who succumbed to Acute Myeloid Leukemia that was related to Gulf War Syndrome. My question relates not to the GWS, but how to acknowledge his service to his widow and step-son, who he married after he got out of the Army but before he got sick. Would receiving a coin be a sad reminder of what caused his illness/death?

MAJ Brandt, it is inspirational to read about the sympathetic motivation. There are many things you can do to honor a Veteran’s life. For his widow and step-son, a first principles measure could be to insure that all eligible benefits have been realized.
