For the last 8 years I have used Samsung Galaxy phones. The first one I got was the Nexus. After that I graduated to the Note3. Upgraded to the Note4, then the S7 Edge. The phones were decent enough, let me manage my E-Mail, and do the tasks I needed to, but every single one of them wound up having issues with charging as the time to upgrade drew near. This time I considered crossing to the dark side and replacing my Android Phone with an Apple Phone. I have Itunes already as I had an Ipod in the past. I was exploring my options, and came across the new offering from Blackberry. My first thought was that Blackberry is too proprietary in the software department, and the need for the server software was a huge turn off. I read that they were transitioning from BOS to Android, and decided to give the new device a try.
So I will start with what I don't like. I don't like that the keyboard lacks consistency. At times it registers a swipe when I am trying to type, and other times I have to swipe a couple of times to get it to register the input. I don't like that some of the keys on the keyboard are sluggish to respond. I don't like that when I watch an Amazon video, it displays the video in the middle half of the screen with the outer 25% above and below are black bars (I understand that it is to keep the aspect ratio, but still a con of the device). I don't like the way that the screen is mounted to the device. It seems like a point of failure in the event of a drop. I don't like that Blackberry has customized the Android Software rather than just using the base software. I don't like the smaller screen, but it is a trade off for the physical keyboard (I like having a physical keyboard more than I dislike the smaller screen).
Things I do like. First it has a physical keyboard. I like the tactile feel of a physical keyboard over that of the digital keyboard. I like the camera. It takes good pictures. I like the audio quality from the speakers and using the included headset. I like the blackberry security software. I like the built in password keeper. It is a great device for work because of the blackberry hub. The hub lists calls, E-Mails, text messages all in one convenient location. I like that it uses the USB C connector for its charging plug. I REALLY like that after 13 hours on battery with regular use, the device hovers at around the 50% mark for the battery.
I have not had the phone that long, but so far I have been happy with the device.
