The issue is that since the M16 system has served for so long, we have very large body of institutional knowledge about how to keep them shooting. New platforms mean new teething problems, and as we know that, almost inevitably, leads to dead Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines.

The M16 Family is getting very long in the tooth, no doubt, but also remember that most of the people who still have to use them, are very very good with them.

Long in the tooth, but the basic premise is still great and there hasn't really been anything better to come along that was more than just a refined version of the AR-15 platform.

And there are plenty of 308 based AR weapons that could be used. My home made AR-10 (technically closer to a DPMS LR-65) weighs 12 pounds with bipod and optic. It's chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor, and can accurately engage a target at 1000 yards. (I cant, but it can) It functions identically to a AR-15, the manual of arms is identical. Therefore, every soldier in the Army, Every Marine in the Corps, already knows how to use it.

Haven't these discussions been ongoing for some time, with no decision yet?

12 pounds as shown, unloaded, Harris bipod, SWFA SS 16x scope. Chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor. Can accurately engage a target at 1000 yards. Manual of arms identical to that of a M-4/M-16. Every soldier and marine already knows how to use this. Add some irons, because the military will want them, and have something like this produced. It's accurate, it's reliable, it's familiar, and it meets the need.

The AR-15 and AR-10 platforms are old, but they work, and arguably nothing better has come around yet. After 50 years most of the kinks have been worked out pretty well.

If they just wanted 308 performance, they could start chambering M-4s in 6.5 Grendel. Just adopt it as a service round. It only requires a barrel change and a different bolt; both of which are mechanically easy to replace by anyone semi-competent. It really wouldn't even cost that much by military standards, and suddenly every soldier with a M-4 can now engage targets at 800 yards effectively.
