They're just concerned with maintaining their naval port. Assad is the only guarantee that they'd be able to keep it. They don't want to be constantly fighting ISIS or Iran/Turkey for it, so they back Assad.

Sgt Wayne Wood - especially w/ Turkey now courting Iran. I can really see Iran & Turkey teaming up once ISIS is out of northern Iraq to try and annex that territory - give Iran direct connection to Syria. And then the two teaming up to take Syria. Perhaps a formation of a new Ottoman empire?
