One of the two was smart enough to know when to quit.

The Soviet Union has never been a world leader where as we feel in 2020 we need to lead and leaving the good Afghanis to fend for themselves has not been as easy for us as it probably was them. Look at the people that are fighting the President to make NATO pay their fair share and people say we are abandoning our allies. Nope, just not interesting in paying to be a leader anymore.

MAJ Byron Oyler It’s my belief that using past and current strategies, our lofty goals can not be achieved. We could go all out medieval on them and win temporarily, but in the end the Taliban would reconstitute and restore their dominance. JMHO

You don't overcome thousands of years of being an invaded country quickly, of course they aren't happy.
