The teacher needs to study up on what is done this time of year by different religions.

MAJ James Woods
CSM Richard StCyr - That training isn't limited to the 1SG course since cultural awareness training at the unit level is something that 1SG should have experienced for years as a Junior enlisted. Same goes for the Commander. So if both the 1SG and Commander made it to that level not knowing the health, welfare, religious needs of their soldiers then I would question their intentions as malicious, insensitive, and inexcusable.

MAJ James Woods - Unfortunately for the NCOs at least up through 2010 the first formal introduction to field feeding a Soldier other than a food service MOS would encounter was at the First Sergeants Course. I used this as an example because it's one of those no shit there I was scenarios that actually occurred.
When questioned the leadership actually assumed that the MRE cases contained suitable meal selections for all Soldiers and had no earthly idea that they had to request special MREs or that they existed. So no, not malicious at all. Also the Soldiers could have spoken up and said hey SQD LDR don't forget to lay on chow we can eat.
Had my room mate, partner in many exploits and best friend at FT Benning not been Jewish when I was a Buck Sergeant, I too probably would have been ignorant But because of that interaction and exposure to a different faith, I was a much better rounded Squad Leader through CSM and truth be known overall person in general.
What the Army teaches as consideration of others, is really tolerance of others that folks parents should be instilling in them, and very little practical understanding of the value placed on symbols of faith and cultural meanings of things.
I think we're basically on the same page.

The ultimate bullying is actually teachers, textbooks, scientists, and administrators that restrict the religious freedom of the children. If a child's family has traditions that are not harming anyone, then let them be, let them pray, let them worship, and let them speak!

Wow! Can't imagine the ever loving absolute amount of heck my folks would have raised with the teacher if I'd had to wash my cross off as a kid.
Then again I'd have been in the office for refusing to take it off, in my mind that would have been like denying Christ's sacrifice and that of the Saints and Martyrs.
So now this kid has been publicly embarrassed in front of his friends, will probably be hesitant to participate in outward displays of his faith and the teacher has taught his peers that the kid is an oddity or did something bad.
Where we read that the kid explained the purpose and significance to his peers that were interested in what the symbol meant as well as the teacher. Which is a great way for kids to learn tolerance of others.

This child now knows the reality of being persecuted for Christ! I pray that his faith grows because of this incident, and because of the support that follows!!
