Veterans Bring Exceptional Skills, Including Soft Skills

In 1976, I got out of the Army and moved to Delmar, NY. I was going to SUNY Albany, and needed a job,I applied to a Hess gas station in Delmar. I got the job because even for a gas station job, I showed up in a suit and tie. I worked there for 6 months. I was approached by the Regional Manager and asked if I wanted a job as a manager of a station, for $17,500 (This is in 1977), lots of money! I was honored, but I had a question. Why me, there were others who worked at that gas station for years before I arrived, why choose me? I was told, you always are on time, and when needed, you always make yourself available, and you do stuff without being told. A testament to my time in the Infantry. I turned it down, as I wanted to finish my education, but, it was an eye opener as to what I had learned as an Infantryman that I thought was useless
