I am disabled/retired, and I have both a Medicare Advantage Plan and VA health care. I use both.

I got out of the Army in 1977, so I didn't have any health-insurance until September 1980, when I went to work for a company that provided health-insurance. I left that job, and its health insurance in 1993, and didn't have health insurance again until about 2005. I lost that insurance, which was through my wife, in 2007, and didn't have anything until 2008, when I started with the VA. VA health care was all I had until my Medicare kicked-in in 2012, and then I started getting what I couldn't get through the VA with my Medicare. I still get what I can't get from the VA through my Medicare, and I am now looking for a good dermatologist, because I lost my VA dermatology care last January. I also have an outside Primary care doctor, because there is some Primary care I can't get at the VA.

SGT Steve McFarland - Thanks for anecdote. As article mentions, VA does provide some health care coverage, but even the agency recommends additional insurance based on gaps
