I can second that (and probably a lot cheaper than the VA study). I was prescribed opioids when my sciatica first hit me and they did nothing for the pain. They did, however, make me constipated (I know WTMI). When I asked my GP for his recommendation, he said that I have two choices: (1) See a neurologist (who would like prescribe more pain medication or (2) see an orthopedist (who would likely cut me). I didn't want any more pain medication and am averse to knives unless some foreign body (bullet, blade, or shrapnel) or cancer, needs to be removed. So, I elected Door #3: I submitted myself to a competent chiropractor who fixed the problem through manipulation. Pain relieved. Done.
