The reason this attack was so sophisticated is that Google Docs is a legitimate app, especially used across universities for collaborative team projects. This phishing scam takes advantage of that legitimacy by masquerading as the service, quite convincingly. Also, Google is well aware of this, has removed many of the offending pages and accounts, and are working on proactive security measures to prevent future abuses of this type.
As always, adhere to the First Rule of Interneting: Trust Nothing.

Google states they have the phishing scam under control, but still good to follow.
