General Washington had to deal with several such incidences of being deposed. Gen. Gates of Saratoga fame probably had the best chance of taking over due to his victory and capture of a British army. Gen. Washington went on to also capture an enemy army under Cornwallis which won the war for the Americans. It was only General Washington's force of character which kept the army alive through such times as the Valley Forge winter encampment of 1777 - 17778. The army had to wait until May to get out of winter quarters due to the bogs of mud which made transportation difficult or impossible for an army.
