If we would have remain in place as we did with Japan, Germany, Italy and S. Korea the Afghanistan could have developed into a great society. Instead America chose to abandon them. America had a responsibility to the people of Afghanistan as we did with Japan, Germany, Italy and S. Korea post WWII. We dismantled all these countries Governments and stayed well past the point of them being able to stand on their own feet. Why not Afghanistan? America FAILED and have created a humanitarian disaster. It wasn't about the understanding the culture, we didn't understand the Japanese culture yet we made them successful. It is Americas failure to recognize that we could have left Japan, Germany, Italy, and S. Korea to give Afghanistan the same attention as those countries received. America was there for nation building and we have wasted our peoples tax dollars and our service members time and lives.

Blowing Afghanistan has nothing to do with poor leadership, and everything to do with the nature of their culture. They are a tribal society that is loyal to their tribes. They're geographically separated across their nation by the rugged terrain and remoteness. There is no sense of of Afghanistan as a whole, but as individual towns/hamlets/tribes except in the bigger cities where more modern civilization thrives. Try explaining life in Kandahar to a rural farmer who gets everything he needs locally. This is the problem that no one can solve and no one ever will.
