These are all great grips.

NWU: I thought it was a very bad idea, even though I saw it coming. Using the same utilities that USCG wears just makes sense. They are time and use tested, and getting these adds economies of scale. Likewise with the boots, I knew it would be an issue when I saw that there was one kind of boots allowed. Uniform shoes have never accommodated all feet, and this causes all kinds of problems. Allowing sailors some freedom to choose, as long as they meet appearance and safety standards makes absolute sense, and will probably save money as well...

Leadership: has always been an issue; promoting volunteer work and other extra curricular activities is nice, but - why does the military need to "give back"? We already serve and go "in harms' way..." Likewise, some leeway for mistakes would be nice. VADM Tom Rowden (CNSP/Surface TyCom) is a proponent of this...

SRB's for more ratings is a good idea, but there's always the budget issue. When active duty pay is being cut, it's hard to justify increasing SRBs.

Likewise, IT system upgrades are always needed, but again, there's the $$$ issue, especially as fast as technology changes.

NWUs are/were unsafe for shipboard use. They melt.

Some of these sound quite legitimate. Let's get some decent boots. But stop with the "coveralls" already! After two years on an SSBN, the flight suit/jump suit configuration sucks - everybody who could afford it went to Sears and bought separate tops and bottoms. There is nothing worse than having to make a head call, and to struggle not to drop the collar of your "poopy suit" (a) in to the commode, or (b) in to the puddle of yuk that is inevitably on the floor in front of the commode.
