Consciousness is a prerequisite for general AI. Until a machine has consciousness, it has no context for the tasks it performs. A machine can't understand its environment until has the context from consciousness. Understanding is what allows us humans to figure solutions to new problems (which is where the general part of general AI comes from). I haven't heard of anything makes me think consciousness is anywhere close on the horizon, and I wonder if it requires a new architecture - something other than our von Neumann computer architecture.

Neither consciousness nor self-awareness is necessary for AI. All that is necessary (and sufficient) is an awareness of it’s environment and the ability to perform a task or tasks within the parameters if that environment.
Again, neither consciousness nor self-awareness is a requirement.
Again, neither consciousness nor self-awareness is a requirement.
