I had been out of the Marines about 15 years when I was placed in charge of a prison riot team that basically existed only on paper and told to make it the best in the state. When we closed ten years later, I was at 100 percent certified members, with another 100 percent on standby to become certified.
I personally recruited the core members based on what other skills they had to offer, and their mindset, and they took care of recruiting for the most part from there.
My basic operating principle for this was another quote by Sun Tzu. "Treat your soldiers as your children and they will follow you into the deepest valleys. Treat them as your own beloved sons and they will follow you unto death."
When we were disbanded at closing of the facility, I would have put them against anyone in the state for their ksas and loyalties to each other and the job.

I've seen this school of thought before... and, I absolutely agree that good leaders are the one's that are able to inspire their teams to WANT to follow them.

Thank you for the kind words. I am a type of leader that I take care of my people for before myself. I will stand right beside or behind my troops anytime! I use the motto of "take care of your people and they will take care of you".

TSgt Steve Waide - Yes, those are the kind of leaders that have people gravitate to them. They make people feel part of something bigger than themselves. It's a powerful feeling to truly be part of a team, something most people never get to experience.
