Good primer. Thanks!
Top 5 states that rely on Dept. of Education for K-12: Mississippi; South Dakota; Montana; Alaska; Arkansas. Largest single City/County %: Detroit. MI; followed by 8/9 red state cities or counties. Philly, PA is 9th in the Top 10.
At the end of fiscal 2024, the department’s direct student loan portfolio stood at $1.47 trillion – $1.37 trillion in principal and $104.4 billion in accrued interest – owed by 38.2 million borrower customers. These are the "good" i.e. non-predatory loans, btw.
