Could work if they figure out the marketing approach. Hard to reach people on a wide scale since they have no mass marketing campaigns on diverse platforms. People that watch shooting oriented programs are already gun owners. People that read Field and Stream are already hunting and fishing.

Nike and Apple both have broad reach across the consumer information spectrum. Going to be difficult for gun makers to achieve. I just don't foresee Smith & Wesson airing commercials during episodes of Law & Order touting the virtues of their products.

I do know that every purchase I've made in the 'firearms' arena over the past 20 years has increased in value. Can Apple and Nike claim the same?

I don't exactly know what the "average" gun buyer is. I do know that advertising doesn't mean shit to me. If I haven't put my mitts on it or talked to someone who has, it's all hear say. I don't spend $500+ on anything because of flashy advertisement. There might be some that do, but they aren't the core buyers and won't change the companies bottom line at the end of the year.
Slick advertising is for Yuppies and newbs.

TSgt David L. That is a fair point. One thing about youtube is that you can find honest reviews of a firearm by people who are not paid to say only nice things about a gun. Still without putting one in my hand I would never buy. Though I am learning that something else to consider before purchasing a weapon for EDC is to make sure you can acquire a good holster.

PO3 Steven Sherrill - I'm not saying that you tube type independent reviews aren't useful, but they are opinions, and we know what those are like! LOL
Being able to get a decent holster is something a lot of folks never consider until it's too late.
