From an old veteran. IMO something did need to change with how SM were kept physically fit. It was always the same, tear down the muscles, then run, over and over... didn't work very well. What really got my attention, was when a team of 20 I was apart of were allowed to trained separately for French Commando school for 6 weeks. We never ran 1 foot. We speed (walking) rucked with increasingly heavier rucks and distance (max 20K). Did sit-ups / push-ups and climbed a 3m +- rope, hands only. Everyday. The unit decided the day before we left that while we were gone there would be a APFT for record, we had to take it before we left. All 20 crushed the APFT, with time to spare. We were blown away! The next morning we took a harder PT test to gain entry into the school. All made it there too. From then on I knew how worthless the "by the book" was, and watched all the PT scores of the 20 drop. Not a truly scientific test, no control groups or people checking oxygen intake.. Just what it was... maybe just pure adrenaline and excitement for the school, but I don't think so.
