Regardless of whether someone wants to blame COVID, the current administration or past practices for the current bout of inflation, they should be aware that it is currently a world wide phenomenom, not one restricted to the US. So what does all this mean for 2022? Even if the world as a whole is unlikely to be engulfed by inflation-driven violence, expect to see persistent inflation-linked protest activity in some countries, punctuated by periodic outbursts of more disruptive demonstrations and low-level violence — along with the underlying risk that this could spiral. Even if social unrest does not bring down a government, protesters can still succeed in paralyzing urban areas, disrupting supply chains via strikes, transport blockages and other measures — and in doing so sustaining a risk of violence, particularly in those places identified as more vulnerable.
