I would love to ask this question of my friend who forges blades to see what he thinks. I will ask him next time I talk to him and post his response.

Cpt. Jack, You're spot on in your choices...
I carried a Kukri on my LCE and a Chisa Katana on the Ruck for years and A Gurber Mk I on my belt in the Field

Thank you for introducing me to the Gerber MK. That looks like another good choice.

I guess it would all come down to usage. The Japanese blades were considered the best when it came to cutting, however may not fair too well against Medieval European armor.

True. But Medieval European armor isn't used anymore and we are talking about a "modern sword". Such a weapon would be used in a melee when firearms and ammunition are spent, and enemies are locked in hand-to-hand combat. Thinking about that scenario, I might make the kukris primary and the katana secondary

In that scenario, I wouldn't be opposed to having a Kukri as a primary, and a tanto as a secondary, as tanto tips are amazing as piercing weapons, but still maintain the cutting edge of a katana (though not the power).

In modern times where we have to deal with the possibility of ballistic vests, we want piercing over cutting, but it all depends on the scenario.
