Since China already revealed their strategy on Taiwan was to embargo and choke Japan after a successful surrender of Taiwan. I think it would be war with China at some point without question. I don't see us giving up the Pacific to China.

Japan would be on our side... The Chinese and Japanese have a long history and they are no fans of what the Japanese did to them. Both sides have very long memories of past offenses. The Japanese don't want that karma visited back on them and it would be very unfortunate for them IF China were to get Taiwan. They know the deal.

Capt Jeff S. - Agreed I don't see it as a purely China to US confrontation either an I think China would be decimated. As it stands now Military experts says they do not even have the expertise to mount an amphibious operation and Taiwan could still repel China all by itself. So nothing to worry about in the next 5-10 years at least.

IF we do not go to war to protect Taiwan, what country would believe in our protection and why would anyone want to be our ally?

I doubt we would start WWIII over the loss of Taiwan. Lots of noise and threats, but as with Hong Kong, it would be another bump in the road for China. Heck, we are shaking in our boots at the thoughts of reciprocal trade. Good article here.
