As the song said, "...they took the last train for the coast" around the same time that society began using litigation as a weapon, people began rising in organizations due to "looking the part", rather than obtaining results...and we began thinking of "hurt feelings" as a physical injury.

I knew quite a few great Chiefs...but one of the best was a "red sleeve" who once invited me to the Chief's Club, then tried to start a fight with some of his shipmates looking back at me saying, "You all don't want him to jump in...he's small but angry!" I doubt the guy would "fit" into most molds of what we think makes a good SNCO these days, but at sea-his knowledge was unquestioned, his care for his Sailors undisputed, and his mentoring of a young officer superb.
