George Washington had to fight desertion and recruit an army. He acted as an ambassador with the French and worked with the founding fathers. His army was ill fed, ill equipped, and ill clothed.

Gen Marshall. Anticipated the US involvement in WWII, and started the rapid build up of the US military starting late 30's. Great military strategy, great at selecting senior generals for their respective roles, and then post war Europe plan. He did it all.

A name that comes to mind is U.S. Army Major General Terry de la Mesa Allen who commanded both 1st Infantry Division, & later, 104th Infantry Division in WW II Europe. Suggested reading: TERRIBLE TERRY ALLEN (2003) by Gerald Astor.
