Work isn't going anywhere. (Also, my Amazon Echo is an okay music speaker and utterly useless beyond that.)
Anyway, for the United States to maintain a lead in technology development, two things need to happen:
1. Academic performance must undergo immediate, vast improvement - requiring both fundamental changes to K-12 schooling and a higher cultural value on intellectual achievement. Math is the language of technology.
2. Improve the process for qualified, capable persons wishing to become Americans to immigrate here and work in our technology sector.

I think many of the fear-mongers are really interested in placing obstacles to market entry in order to protect big companies in the field from new competition.
