It took us approximately 50 years to figure out the whole Naval Aviation thing, so it will take the Chinese a similar amount of time, although they have the benefit of seeing how it's done, whereas we had to figure everything out on our own.

SSG (P) Unger: It goes quicker if you cheat, as the Chinese have, but they will pay for their inexperience when the chips are down.

GySgt John Olson - 50 Years was a rough estimation, Within that rough estimate is the development and perfection of the steam catapult. Ironically, we got that from the British, who now do not use it anymore. Figuring out how to use something and becoming proficient with it (ie, Subject Matter Expert) are two very different things. We went from traditional fuelled carriers to nuclear-powered carriers. We are also transitioning from steam catapults to electromagnetic catapults. There is a constant upgrade in our knowledge base in order to make our operations better, faster, more efficient, etc. That takes time, and we have paid for that time in blood and treasure. Even at the end of WW II, we were still flying planes off the deck under their own power (ie, no catapult).
As stated, the Chinese may have an easier time of it, because they have the luxury of studying any number of navies who use aircraft carriers. They don't have to figure out the equation before they can solve it, because they already have the answers available. Will they have growing pains as they tweak their own systems and operations? Of course. But it will still take them some time before they can confidently and believably commence power-projection operations as a blue-water navy. They are still having problems with basic stuff (per the article) and don't have enough of the right types of aircraft to fly off their decks. This takes time and treasure to figure out.

The funniest part of the story to me was, "When naval officers started operating the Liaoning, they faced a big challenge – commanding more than 2,000 crew members from 19 ethnic groups, according to a China Central Television documentary that aired in March." Meaning they are still working on their society issues. Not that it can't be fixed, but the point is this is 2017, your military should of handled that issue long ago. They are having major issues getting everyone fed with 10 areas. Heck the Forrestal had a main chow hall and a forward galley. That took care of more than 2K. Just saying.

Yup. All this is brand new to them. They can copy the designs and build the hulls, but the basics like personnel management, shift/time management, resource planning, etc. are killing them right now. You cannot operate planes from the carrier if you cannot get your Sailors fed efficiently.

SSG(P) (Join to see) - Let's take this one more step farther. The Russies like the Chicoms do not believe in safeties and back up systems as we do. This is the argument that is handed over saying that the numbers will over run the US in a battle. Guns, Tanks, Aircraft and Ships that are easy to fix and durable. This sounds great but here is the problem. Russies power plants are unsafe. Their Subs are not safe to sail. Poor maintenance an unsafe designs. US Subs are still running decades safely, huge difference from the Russies. China and Russia do not have EPA nor do they worry the same over workers safety as is done in the US.
The would lose horribly against the US and I'm not ignorant to say we would not lose any, it would be a fight.
