If told to find one word in this essay that best summarizes the problem, I would choose "expectations". Our response to almost every occasion is defined by our expectations. Have you ever faced Valentines Day without a "significant other" in your life? Well, if you're having a problem with Christmas, stop and consider what you are expecting and then how likely those expectations will be met. If we're honest, I doubt if Christmas lives up to the expectations of many except those who focus only on the Christian meaning of the season. They will not be disappointed, will they? C'mon now, all you atheists and anti-theists, Muslims, whatever. Be honest. I'm a Jew and I still get it. Can't you? Me? I'm never disappointed. All I expect is a day off from "work" (yes, I'm retired, but I still keep busy. Men who don't die). And I expect a day with family (especially the grandchildren) and a feast. I'm never disappointed...

SFC Christopher Taggart "Between stressful end-of-year deadlines, family dysfunction and loss, poor eating and drinking habits, and increasingly cold and dark winter days, it’s easy for the holiday season to feel not so merry and bright." That covers it pretty good, plus many go beyond their means financially and add more stress to their situation. Commercialization of all the holidays has to lend to the problems. The true meaning of Christmas has become lost.
