This was not a very bright thing for those soldiers to do, regardless of their motives.

According to what I could find on the internet, it was an attempt at dark humor, like when Prince Harry dressed up as a Nazi for a costume party. Not very bright. Everything is information operations these days, and a “joke” like that will never play well with the public.
