Let's start with a primer on just what a machine gun is before discussing anything as complex as the existing Federal laws. Auto and semi-auto confuse about 90% of the media and a lot of the public.

Many people have just been told "NO". In reality, although it is a time consuming process, owning a Full Auto gun is perfectly legal. Much like the "assault rifle" misconception, (AR-15 is only a rifle) most of the myths and misunderstood rules are propagated by the media.

I have run into more then a few gun owners that are unaware of the laws. With the way the media goes at it they think any full auto weapon cannot be owned but a civilian. Same thing for suppressors.
I think that part of it outside the media what you are not involved in and don't care about you don't learn about.

MAJ Christopher M. I am still amazed at how many people perceive that suppressors work. They have seen in the movies a totally silent gun, and think that putting a suppressor on anything automatically makes it as silent as a whisper. You do make a valid point in that what folks are not directly involved in, they don't care to be informed about. The corollary to that is that, not be informed does not stop people from having an opinion on the subject matter.

It seems that the ATF might be considering taking the suppressors off the NFA list. GOA and other organizations are pushing them as part of a comprehensive hearing protection program.

PO1 John Crafton - I get all the exercise I need jumping to conclusions.
That is sadly the prevailing mentality.
