Like so many scholarly papers, this one is not going to attract a popular following. Although quite correct in every regard, it overlooks an even simpler explanation, one that, I believe, most anyone can grasp. Simply, socialism fails because it concentrates power in a central authority and such power attracts those who love power. It's really hard, isn't it, for a tyrant to take power over us if we are a bunch of individuals. It's like herding cats. However, when everyone is gathered into a herd that follows the one wearing the bell, the tyrant need only take possession of the bell. And who is so smart, so wise, that they can make the best decisions for all of us? Of course, "the smartest man in the room" and we know who that is, don't we?
That's it. That simple. Nothing more. Nothing less.

I think you're confusing Socialism as an economic system with authoritarian or totalitarian forms of government. I agree completely, however, that collectivism cannot work in the long run, because it quashes individualism. In almost every case, though, it also messes with economic freedom. Thanks for your comment, Jack.

CDR Michael Goldschmidt - No confusion on may part. Socialism will always lead to tyranny. Whenever you centralize power (collective decision-making/the means of production/other socialist methodology) you will attract those who long for power to the center of power. Thus socialism as an economic system and authoritarian or totalitarian forms of government go hand in hand.
