That all changer once you retire and age. Then your friends tend to disappear for more definite reasons.

This is one of the downsides of moving from a manufacturing economy to a service jobs economy. Manufacturing jobs were more set schedules and plants operated that way. Service jobs have to operate when consumers want the service. Some of this (like Amazon) is driven by the need for immediate gratification. How many times do you order stuff from Amazon that is delivered the next day even when you don't really need it that fast. Amazon staffs for peak order periods and to fill orders almost immediately. In many ways, we have created this.

I am in the management category and 60 hour weeks plus lots of air travel are the norm. We were told all of this technology would allow us to work smart and less and we would have a better "quality of life". Companies figured out we could do more with less people and here we are tethered to phones, laptops etc. everywhere we go.

These shift changes are bad for social engagement and for family life and they are having a real impact on people's lives.
