Wil (one L) Wheaton. Character actor, voice actor, and Geek God. Refered to by Baby Stewie as H-wil H-weaton. He has been in the business longer and more consistently than Chappelle.

Wil Wheaton (it's one L, BTW, at least spell his name right) is a Geek God. His popularity is not as widespread, but it is MUCH deeper within the circles that admire him.
According to IMDB, Chappelle has 30 acting credits, including major roles in 4 movies and being the main star of his own show.
Wil Wheaton has 137 acting credits, including major recurring character (but not star) roles in 3 series, hosting two different shows, and major roles in 3 movies. He has a huge geek following and is as active - if not more - on the Con circuit as Chappelle is on the comedy circuit.
He is not attacking Chappelle out of jealousy or an attempt to grab some of Chappelle's fame for himself.
While I agree that his attack was ill advised - and that is being generous to Wil - your analysis of *why* is way off base.
I understand you are not attempting to be a journalist, just another voice screaming your opinion at the universe. But some very basic research can help inform your opinions and make them appear less idiotic to someone with basic knowledge and access to Google.

Sgt (Join to see) But if you ask 100 folks to name 5 Chappelle projects and to name 5 Wheaton projects, you're gonna find more who can name Wheaton's work.
Chappelle's fan base is broader. Wheaton's is more devoted.
Which is what I said from the start.
Also, Wheaton has publicly said, multiple times, that he doesn't WANT broader popularity and name recognition. He is happy being a "niche" star.

SFC Casey O'Mally - Only 5 people are gonna know who he is.
And that's what non-popular people say. "I don't wanna be big."

Sgt (Join to see) Except he *is* popular. He is MOBBED at Cons. The entire reason he was on Big Bang is because of his cache in geek circles. He wasn't a random guy who got a recurring role, he was a Geek God who was asked to come on specifically because of his status in the communities the characters in the show were portraying participate in.
And I am guessing more than 5 on 100 know who Will Wheaton is. Even if it is only 5, 4 will be able to name multiple Wheaton projects. 3 will discuss - at length - their favorite Wheaton role and why it was better than your favorite Wheaton role, and 2 will wax poetic about that time they saw him live and in person and how awesome that experience was. And 7 of the 5 will laugh at you if you say you only know him as Wesley Crusher.
When I say he is a Geek God, I am not saying that lightly. He is in the pantheon with the likes of Stan Lee, Joss Whedon, Mark Hamill, Bill Shatner, Jack Kirby, and Nathan Fillion. Higher than demigods like Jim Parsons (or any of the cast of Big Bang), Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Gillian Anderson, Bruce Campbell, Carrie Fisher, LeVar Burton, and even Harrison Ford.
