There would be very exciting naval battles... briefly. Contests for air supremacy would be interesting. I believe we could reinforce any land troops through Kao Hsiung and Taipei. Questions remain about how the new island bastions change the equations.

China has a very large land force but little to project force, not even as far as Taiwan. The Taiwanese could most likely hold them at bay until the US intervened (if the US intervened).
