I have met only one person, in my decade of service, who knew the history behind challenge coins. Many site Roman Empire. But, I have only been informed once of the significance in the military, and it's traditions thereafter.

The story I heard was that there were so many Special Forces posers during and after Vietnam that each SF unit had their own coins made, and was a positive check on who was the real deal and who was a poser. So if you claimed to be part of a SF group, but couldn't produce your coin, then you were considered a poser.
