Xi now appears poised to become as all-powerful as Chairman Mao, though he does not yet command the Great Helmsman’s near-divine status or adulation. If recent years are any guide, under Xi a severe crackdown will continue against dissenters, religious groups, and would-be westernizers. In Xi’s view, the west has little to offer China besides decadent behavior, racial mixing, loud music, and social rot. The United States, Japan and India are seen as dangerous, determined enemies bent on destroying united China.

Hmm... not sure i agree.
One of the biggest problems facing communism is the proletariat getting a glimpse of the evils of capitalism & then wondering “why not me?”
Xi Jinping is doing a lot to bring China along, but in typical ham-fisted totalitarian fashion.
As Reagan used to say, “ ... a rising tide lifts all boats ... “. The same applies to sampans & junks.
His major crackdowns have been against corruption ... something new. The moves against democracy are just reflexive, he can’t gelp it.
China IS growing and modernizing both economically and militarily.
