Yup... i posted the original question... so, now what? Mineral wealth? Other natural resources? A foothold in south central Africa?

Probably all the above. Africa is pretty much a vacuum where China is concerned. They really have everything to gain and no ill will towards them from African countries.

I figure they make the loan to Rhodesia, which then uses the cash to import Chinese trade goods. Trade foothold established for future expansion & hopefully life support for the Rhodesian economy

I mean China has multiple business ventures it is invested in the regionconsidering it's step up of military presence in the region one of the big things being ivory
