As a reservist what is your experience like in your MOS? Would you recommend it over the other? I know they both work together when need be but I'm trying to choose one to reclass to.

12R: Interior Electrician

12R over 12K - we always used generators for power in the field. I don’t ever remember 12K doing their MOS. Best engineer MOS’s are 12B, 12N, than 12W followed by 12C, 12R, 12T, 12V than last 12K. Again this just my opinion from these MOS actually doing their job in training and overseas.

Thanks man. I hear you, I don't know of too many K jobs being done this deployment but I know most of the Bs I've ran across in country haven't did much. Is 12V still an actual MOS? I heard in reclass they were phasing it out. That would actually be a better option since being a 12N I'm working heavy equipment already.

I would say it depends on the BN you are in. I know of some engineer commands that have projects running all the time and both the 12Ks and 12Rs get a lot of MOS work. Two things to consider: is your primary goal to branch out to increase promotion prospects or are you just bored being a 12N and are you trying to find better civilian employment prospects? I agree with SGT White, 12R tend to have broader work assignments, even outside of a construction role.

I’ve done a lot more carpentry and concrete work than electrical in my twelve years. If you do or civilian side, you can be a good asset to the reserves. Otherwise, you go years between electrical missions and are a bit stunned when given one. I can’t wait to reclass.

Yeah my plan was to become an electrician on the civilian side and become a R to give me a headstart on understanding the job and mutually support both my military and civilian endeavors but it's looking like I might just take another route altogether. Thank you for your input brother.

I’ve been doing electrical now for almost a year and a half. I also leave for basic with 12R as my MOS July 21st. What kind of electrical missions are there(national guard).

You will be doing the same thing either way... which is not doing anything mos related at all ever... if i could go back i would at least be a equipment operator or a mechanic...

Yeah, i dont know how things are when you deploy, i hear most of everything no matter what your class is all youre gonna be doing is 12W stuff. If you want to reclass to R or K i think thats just a personal preference which you would like to learn more. In the reserves you wont be doing much of either. SSG (Join to see)

SPC (Join to see) well... shit. Yeah I get what you're saying. Part of me switching to the reserves was to get training that'll help on the civilian side. I already know a bit about carpentry so I was looking at R and K. I'll learn all I can though

Yeah man its a personal preference for sure. I choose 12k for the same reason; for education to further my civilian career.

SPC (Join to see) nice. One of my guys is similar. He works for the AF doing equipment operator/ maintenance work and he's an Army reservist. Glad to hear it helped you out one way or another
