I've been very interested in this MOS for quite sometime. I am within a couple of weeks of submitting my application in order to reclassify to 12P and hope that I am accepted. I was wondering if anyone could help me with the specifics of the differences of the specialties. I am currently a 91D (Power Generation Equipment Specialist) and have been roughly cross trained to work on Diesel Engines.

I am more interested in the electrical side of the house (Long-term goal is to finish Bachelors in Electrical Engineering) so it seems that the Instrumentation or Electrical specialty is the path for me, but what are the true differences between the two? Is there cross training going on between specialties? Thank you in advance for any and all information that is given.

I second what SSG Nelson said. I went through the electrical specialty, and loved every minute of it. Now I spend a lot of time cross-training the I-Techs and mechanics on electrical testing, etc. We are trained a little deeper on mechanical issues as they arise, but it seems only the I-Techs ever do I-Tech stuff. Given the chance to do it over again, I would stay electrical. It's very in depth, broad, and very rewarding. Each person is his/her own though, and I know I-Techs and mechanics who wouldn't trade their jobs for anything.

Just an update if anyone is following or doing research on this application MOS, I’ve recently been accepted to the school. If anyone out there needs some advice or information regarding this process, please feel free to PM me. I try to check RP at least once a week.
