Is going flight warrant an option for me?
I’m currently in a college ROTC SMP program (I drill with other NG ROTC cadets not regular unit) and feeling school may not be for me. If I dropped out and got sent back to a regular guard unit would putting in a flight packet be an option?
MOS: 15u, 09R (mostly)
SIFT: 55
Flight physical: completed, passed
Rank: e-4
TIS: 4 years
Age: 22
ACFT: 504
College credits: 82 (ROTC will drop me for switching majors)
Thank you all have a good night & stay safe

Based on the details provided, you haven’t mentioned anything that would be a barrier to being a Warrant Officer but I would talk to the assessions folks in your State Aviation office about your situation. In OH, if you told our Selection Board that school “isn’t for you,” they would be interested to hear how that correlates to Flight School. IERW is very academically challenging and we have turned away candidates with poor academic track records. It’s not to be nasty, but once a State NG spends a quota on a candidate to go to flight school, that’s it for the year. If that candidate is unsuccessful, the State doesn’t get reimbursed the school seat that just got used. Some states are hurting so bad for pilots that a qualified FDME and a security clearance will get you in the door. Other States are more selective and you have to compete for a seat. So before you resign anything, I would advise to recon the battlefield in your State.
Another “factor” is if you have contracted with ROTC. If you have, then you may be required to pay back any scholarship money that has been applied to your collegiate expenses.
Lastly, there is always the post graduation reversion option. Finish college, commission, and then revert to Warrant Officer. Some States will be all about that. Other states not so much. The NG is 54 different Armies and the culture and climate are so varied wherever you go.
If you are not contracted and your are committed to leaving ROTC (which is fine), I just simply recommend leaving on a high note. You might have Classmates that could end up being fellow Aviators or even your boss someday. Aviation is one of those jobs where your reputation precedes everything you do and everywhere you go. If you paint your self portrait as a rebel, rogue, or “does-not-play-well-with-others,” that could turn a State Aviation Officer (SAO) or Aviator Selection Board off from endorsing you for one of their coveted (and limited) school seats.
Bottom line: Yes, it sounds like you could still change courses and pursue an Aviation Warrant Officer appointment. But that redirect should be navigated carefully and delicately. Best of luck!

I know of someone that was in the same position. He withdrew from ROTC because at the time aviation slots were hard to come by. He was picked up for flight school. Going thru WOC now. He has a proposed school date 1 year from now.
