I recently went through the lengthy process of getting an appointment for Mohs surgery with a physician outside of the VA. In the past this process worked better, although, it was still slow. My question is: with the addition of Tri West as the gate keeper for fee basis referrals and the increased wait time for an appointment where is the improvement I care for the veteran? I spent hours on the phone being sent from the VA facility to Tri West back to VA the again to Tri West finally having to make my appointment with my selected provider myself anyway. After which I had to inform Tri West of the appointment time so they could talk with the providers office directly and amend the original authorization. This process took 7 weeks. I doubt many veterans will use this system if they have this much trouble accessing care. Is there any help coming in smoothing this process out in the future ?

It has been my experiene that Tri West is the one that handles all outside VA appointments. They are slow to act and they do pay for your gas in the end. But yes, they are notoriously slow. I don't know of anyone using any other company. I have Tricare and wasn't allowed to use it.
