Need to speak to your servicing Career Counselor to get a packet started. That's step 1.

SSG Aaron Marshall - Any career counselor can write you a letter of recommendation. However your servicing career counselor has to recommend you as part of the packet

SFC (Join to see) - But how do I find who my servicing Career Counselor is if we do not have one in CENTCOM? Also how many letters of recommendation would be enough?

I am currently the 79S Senior Career Management NCO. Verify that you meet all requirements outlined in AR 601-280 Appendix B-2. Part of the packet consists of an endorsement from a Command Career Counselor(79S SGM) in your retention hierarchy. It also requires endorsement of the first O-5 in your chain of command.

You will need to speak with your career counselor. They will be able to go through the process with you. You will need to interview with the brigade senior counselor and more than likely the division or installation command career counselor. Do not go over anyone's head. You will find that will not go over well in the Career Counsleor field.

I'm not trying to go over anyone's head. I just would like to know how to get it started. I work for CENTCOM we don't have a Career Counselor assign to us so would I be able to get assistance from another Career Counselor at another unit?

I completely understand. Often it is tempting when there is not a counselor immediately present. There are definitely counselors at Hunter. The way it works for me is pretty simple. If a Soldier approaches me about becoming a career counselor, I will then evaluate them for as long as it takes to fill comfortable recommending them to ththe senior career counselor. If a Soldier goes straight to the senior career counselor, they will normally call down to the battalion counselor. Just not a good look for the Soldier. We as career counselors work as a team from the top down. There is no better mos in the Army.

SSG (Join to see) - I under SSG, I'm not at Hunter anymore though I'm at MacDill AFB in Tampa, FL. That's the other reason why I came on here to ask for advice or some type of guidance into the right direction before making a move that I will later regret.

Making the move to become a career counselor was the best thing I did in the Army. It's not for everyone. I worked more hours as a career counselor than as a combat engineer. Most people think it's a cushy job because they don't understand the work that goes into it. It's important that you speak with a career counselor to truly understand what the job is.

I just got DA selected for recruiter while I getting my Career Counselor packet together. What was the process for crossing over while on recruiting duty?
