Your commander doesn't generally give a crap about what course you attend. As long as you're qualified and it benefits the unit in some way, they'll generally sign it. With that said, it may be hard to justify the benefit a recon qualified soldier brings to an MI BN vs a combat arms BN.

Personally, I would say it depends on what your goals are. If you’re a squared away soldier and your goals are to a unit that will utilize these skills, i.e. ranger regiment, SMU or go the SF route I would go up to bat for you as an NCO. Honestly, the best way to justify it is if it benefits the units or your personal goals in the future, the more you can justify it the better chance of saying yes.

For RASP you email the 75th ranger recruiter and everything is usually handled via email, SFAS you can look up your local SORB office and email a POC there, SMU they email you, as far as a schools packet, your Schools NCO in the S3 shop should have the knowledge but usually the schools website should have an example. in RSLC’s case it would be the maneuver center of excellence on fort benning, from there it gets routed up the chain of command to the appropriate signing authority, then to schools for a hard slot date. I hope this helps let me know if this does/doesn’t answer your question.
