I am looking to enlist on a 5-year contract in the next 7 days. I have been working with a recruiter, and I am scheduled to go to MEPS Wednesday the 28th. Before I sign my name on the dotted line, I have a few questions and concerns.
1) I can't find anything informational about the 35T MOS anywhere online apart from what the Army advertises. I would like to know what the MOS is really like from the perspective of a soldier in that field. What is a day in the life of a 35T like?
2) Is 35T a support role where I will most likely find myself in a unit building working on equipment, or is a bunch of my training going to be out in the field humping around a ruck and learning how to dig a hole in the woods with the rest of the 11's. The vagueness of what I have found online makes me wonder what the things I'll be doing on a day to day really entail.
3) I have been living on my own for the last 3 years, and this might sound dumb, but I am worried for what I should do with my stuff. I don't have family around that I could swing by their place and store a couple boxes in the attic while I go through training. What am I going to be able to take with me on post after AIT, and what should I just throw away or get rid of all together?
4) AIT for me will be 40 weeks at Fort Huacha. From what I understand I can't have a personal vehicle for that entire stint, and after that I am supposed to go to Fort Benning for jump school. Long story short, will I be able to have a personal vehicle for any of this time? I don't want to have my car sit in the Arizona sun and bake for 40 weeks without ever being turned on. Should I just sell it and look at getting a car after I get assigned post?

I appreciate any feedback you all can give me!

Welcome to the family. I’m hitting my 2 year mark as a 35t on the 28th,
1) we are the IT guys for intelligence systems. To put it plainly
2) that depends on what unit you get attached to. There are tango units where you’ll spend most of your days in the field but on the flip there’s units like mine where it’s a lot of running around fixing systems and testing systems all inside a shop
3) get a storage unit for the important stuff you won’t want to bring anything with you until your first unit which will be roughly 15 months into your contract due to the length of your training. And you’ll be making enough money to replace most things. In training i bought a vehicle built a pc a bed furniture and other expensive things (I’m married and had a house at the time) but in the barracks you’ll be able to buy a tv a console/pc clothes etc. and they have a great transit system set up so you can leave the barracks and enjoy your weekend. So don’t worry about anything that’s not sentimental
4) Yes you can have a personal vehicle but you need to be gold phase (take a test jump through some hoops) I’d recommend selling your current vehicle and getting a new one in Huachuca if you HAVE TO. But if you can just suck it up take the transit system and Uber then you’ll save a lot of headache and get a vehicle at your first unit.

Feel free to message me.

I have some insight I can give as someone attending 35T AIT. Have you already signed your contract?

Kyle Simpson Okay. I can’t comment on the ins and outs of the daily routine because I haven’t gotten to that point, but there are a few things I can inform you about.

Hold time before starting class seems to be 2-5 months for most of the people here. I was on hold for exactly 4 months (from landing here to in-processing for class). National Guardsmen and Reservists get priority to start classes before Active Duty. In my opinion, that isn’t something that should deter you from pursuing the MOS, but it’s something that we wish we were told beforehand, so I’d like to share that information with you.

The other information posted about bringing your POV is slightly incorrect. There are 3 phases of privileges here: Black (4), Gold (5), and Green (5+). You will come here and be given a Black Phase badge. When you complete the first set of phasing tasks (recite verbals- Soldier’s Creed and Army Song, EO/SHARP online training, Cyber Security online training, good academic standing (if applicable), pass height/weight (currently waived due to Covid), pass ACFT (currently waived due to Covid) room inspection, ASU inspection, an exam on Army values, policies, regulations, ranks, Chain of Command, etc) you will become Gold Phase. Gold Phase privileges include being able to wear civilian attire and ride in POV. You cannot drive or rent a vehicle unless you have phased to Green Phase. The phasing checklist for Gold to Green is pretty similar to Black to Gold except that the verbals recited also include the General Orders. When you become Green Phase, you are permitted to have your vehicle once you complete the vehicle inspection. You just get a battle buddy that’s permitted to ride, sign out at the company, and off you go.

Anything else you’re curious about as far as AIT is concerned? I’ve been here since March.
