I work with a guy who is claiming to be a Marine veteran. But he doesn't act like one! How do I go about finding out if he was ever in the military?

You don't have the right to question someone's service simply because they don't fit the stereotype in your head.

If they are benefiting from it, you do. If the person in question used false information to obtain employment, that can and SHOULD be used against them.

Other posters have mentioned official channels. Unofficial methods include asking him about key information (boot camp location, MOS, duty stations, etc.) and asking real USMC veterans if they can corroborate.

Effective, but can be tricky, Major. Have to be real subtle on how you approach this...Especially in today's world of super butt hurt feelings.

You can submit a FOIA request to the NPRC to request publicly releasable records.

He may have served, he may also have been administratively separated before his EAS/ETS, or he just may be a jerk who also served.
