A drill sergeant isn’t a career, it’s a two year assignment. Recruiting is a three year assignment that can become a career if you do well on your first tour of recruiting. Career Counselor is an MOS that you can pick not be recommended for by another Career Counselor. We are VERY picky about who we put in the field, so it may not ever be an option for you.

Hands down, Career Counselor is the best job out there. We have great promotions all the way through SGM. We can be stationed anywhere and in every type of unit. There are opportunities for Airborne, Ranger, USASOC, Sapper and every other high speed school you can think of. We even have a counselor who has been to Military Free Fall.

I can’t rate which is better. I can say as a drill sergeant you should yourself become the master of the basics. The repetition of basic skill tasks is perpetual while on the trail. You will be teaching your craft and you will be leading your future 12B. You can stay in great shape by working out with your soldiers throughout the day. You will have enormous blocks of M4/M16 range density, shoot ! Don’t be the lazy drill sergeant that does nothing but flex ego, get after with your soldiers. This will be the 1st time soldiers are introduced to what the NCO corp is all about, you will be directly shaping their opinions of the NCO corp and Army. Lazy drills bitched about work in my battalion. You’ll have some early days and late days, suck it up, it’s not terrible. Bottom line up front, you’re in charge everyday, you’ll be shaping your MOS’ future soldiers and the days are only as shitty as you make them.

THE BAD: I was considered an "old man" when I got my hat and pumpkin patch, so I had more of a dislike for getting up before the trainees every morning. My body didn't bounce back like the other Drills who were in their 20's and 30's. Also, the green troops were SO spoiled to civilian life to the extent of being screw-ups. VERY AGGRIVATING‼ There WERE exceptions here and there.
THE GOOD: I kept in shape even as a fossil. Now that I'm 72, I just can't maintain the PT life anymore. Also, the pride you experienced at cycle's end when those same knuckleheads ended BCT as Soldiers. OUTSTANDING‼
