We have two children, 11 and 8. How is housing on Fort Irwin and do you recommend living in Barstow? Also, any info on what my days will look like. I am a 91X, maintenance supervisor.

GM07 Ancient here. Live on post. That drive is a safety hazard in itself especially after 10-14 days in the box.
You will be on a very predictably timeline. Just understand you will be doing three actions in any given month. I mean you will be actively observing the rotational unit in the box. Then there is the unit conducting their recon of NTC. These units are 3-6 months out from their rotation. And then there is the unit at LTP. BLUF is you will be busy.
Housing is ok. It’s not 3rd world but it’s also not the greatest. Schools are close by. I waked my kids to school then went to the mine. After rotations we hung out at Big Bear and stayed cool there in the mountains. Congratulations on the assignment and have fun. I miss the pallet burns and smoking cigars up on Freddy Brown with the team.

Awesome. Thanks a lot. Haven’t been to the field in about a year, I sure need it. What units are the OCs assigned to?

SFC (Join to see) I’m assuming you will be a Goldminer observing the BSB. You could also be on a FSC OC/T team so you would be up under one of the other critter OC/T teams.

Like the Gentleman here have already said, stay on post. Barstow is a shithole, especially for your family.

I have been on Irwin since the summer of 2016. Originally in 11th and now in Ops Group and will concur with GM07(A) and recommend living on post. Driving to Barstow or even Victorville/Apple Valley is not worth it for a refit.

Thanks for the reply. My UIC says I’m going to OPS Group. What’s are the differences between 11th and OPS?
Also, did you request the transfer or were you told it was happening?

11th is the OPFOR and Ops Group are the OC/Ts for the rotational units that come here

It was a mutual understanding to 'PCS' me from 11th to Ops Group and had no heart burn on moving over here
