This is more so for Reservist, I believe they still do the promotion board for Regular Army. I know my unit back state side held a mock board before they would send your packet up. An it was to try to get to know the state of mind of the soldier. Cause with this way of doing things, people just get promoted because the have the time in grade or service. I know your highers won't just promote you. But what happens when you transfer units and you fake it till you make it. With no board and no true knowledge of your actions of the past. An those soldiers who don't even plan to sign a second contract, what's the point of promoting them. A year or two left, why even bother. The rank is more than just the extra money in your pocket, you are a leader of soldiers and that PV2 or PFC just getting in meets you and expects a leader not person there just for the check. This has been something I've been thinking about for several years now an I need some feedback from my brothers and sisters on this. All can answer.

SPC,

The issue at hand is not so much the auto promotion which on the active side was being done for awhile during OIF a few years back, it is the lack of leadership mentoring or knowledge. When you put someone in stripes just for the sake of doing it for a numbers count and you don't have them properly trained or knowledgeable for that position or rank, you are not only setting them up for failure but every Soldier that is under their leadership.

We need to continue to focus on teaching, mentoring and training our upcoming junior SPC/CPLs to become quality and knowledgeable NCOs for their sake, their subordinates sake and for the military as a whole to have a better future all around as they are the future leaders as are their subordinates when the old fuddy daddy's such as myself have gone on to pasture.

This is a good question for some of your peers and immediate junior NCOs (E5/E6) to follow up on and give insight as well.

SFC,

Thank you for your feedback, you hit it right on the nose with this one. My father was in the military an he raised me to have a military state of mind. He was afraid when I joined cause he thought the military lost a lot of the real leaders. Thank God my unit state side was full of knowledge and I was taught by some of the best NCOs I've ever met in my life.

I brought this up to one of my NCOs recently and he told me, it happens some times but they can always be taught how to become a responsible NCO. Which is true, but how long, an will that person care to be taught how to become one. It's a tough issue that we are facing. An with the draw down as well, many higher ups are starting to go to "pasture" as you say.

Promotions these days are conditional upon meeting a service remaining requirement (in all cases I've seen 12 months for SGT). If you would deny promotion to someone with only 2 years left, why would he want to reenlist?

Beyond SSG, the RA doesn't have anyone physically appear before a board either.

Promotions are always based on the availability of positions. Your immediate command can't be the approving authority, because soldiers from outside the command are competing for those same positions. Your servicing RRC creates an order of merit list based upon the paper board and will promote and reassign those soldiers accordingly.

If a command wishes to prevent promotion because of a lack of knowledge, there are numerous mechanisms to make that happen. A board style review is not essential.
