What are the pros and cons of being a 91B (light wheeled mechanic), and how can this MOS help you in the civilian world?

I am 26 married with a family looking to join the guard. My goal is to serve and to learn a trade and skill that will help me be successful in a civilian career. I talked to a recruiter and this MOS is one of the top ones in central Florida as far as availability due to there being plenty of units to choose from and bonus “20k”. He also mentioned there is something called a “tech” job available in some units and would like to know how difficult or easy it is to land that job with the guard. Also what kind of units would be the best go to option if possible. Thanks for the help!

For list a list of certifications available for 91B and all the MOS' in the Army. Goto the Army COOL website at http://www.cool.army.mil. Some certificates you may get right away after graduation of AIT, others may have additional requirements.
Don't let the recruiter make you think you'll immediately get a technician job out the gate. Can it happen? Yes, but by no means is it guaranteed right out the gate. In the Guard, it's not what you know but who you know. NCOs, Specialists, and more experienced Privates in your prospective MOS are going to be applying for those jobs too. Not to mention there are the guys who may be "insert random MOS here" in the Guard but are actual ASE Certified Technicians civilian side who may apply as well. I'm not trying to be a debbie downer but I just want you to be realistic. But combine the certs you'll get from the MOS, or any trade oriented MOS in the Army and a little college or trade school with your newly earned GI Bill and tuition assistance, and a new career is just around the corner.
As far as units go, outside of supporting the Civil Support Teams(CSTs), and 20th Special Forces Group, the best Battalion in all the Florida National Guard is 2nd Battalion, 116th Field Artillery. You'll love supporting their vehicles on the ground.

Thank you very much for the response sir! Answered all my questions and appreciate the link.
The recruiter seems very straight forward he really didn’t promise me anything he was more or less going through the possible pros of that mos since I asked about it. So I took it upon myself to research more on the tech positions but haven’t found to much about it until your response thanks a lot. I’m going back Tuesday this time with the wife to talk some more.
As far as the units you mentioned all of them are within my area the most being an hour away. And in my county (Polk) there is 116 and field Artillery all through out the area so that’s great to hear! Thanks again sir!

I am a 91b and I can tell you but its up to you. If you just enjoy working on vehicles on your free time them don't choose this job. I wish I had chosen a better job but but remember it's you who have to do the work not the person telling you how good it is. Military intelligence or a 42A mos area.

After a probationary period you can often board for higher WG positions or GS pay areas such as a production controller. As a technician, most states will not allow you to receive the sign on bonus or you may have to pay a bonus back. Also, tri-care insurance may not be available to techs(often times it is Bluecross blue shield FED, varies by region). Make sure to ask the recruiter about what benefits techs don’t get compared to traditional M-day soldiers. This might make you re-think the tech world.
